Bassist Michael Davis died Feb. 17 after battling liver disease. He was 68. The musician was an original member of the MC5, the legendary Detroit garage-punk band known for their shuddering riffs, incendiary live shows and proto-punk tunes such as ‘Kick Out the Jams.’

Davis left the band in 1972, but rejoined his band mates in both the early-’00s project DKT/MC5 and a reconstituted MC5 with punk legend “Handsome Dick” Manitoba on vocals. The band’s shambling legacy and ferocious influence live on in countless modern indie, punk and garage bands.
