Roughly a year after Amy Winehouse's excessive alcohol intake led to her death, her ex-husband, Blake Fielder-Civil, has reportedly fallen into a coma.

The tragically unsurprising cause of Fielder-Civil's medical distress? A drinking binge, according to his girlfriend Sarah Aspin, who told reporters that he returned home from a visit with friends "slurring his words and staggering."

Added Aspin, who shares a 15-month-old son with Fielder-Civil, "I had to get his shoes and trousers off to help him into bed. Next morning I went to get up and heard a horrid scratching and grating breathing sound. I looked round and saw Blake lying there completely grey. His eyes were rolled back and his mouth was locked together."

According to reports, paramedics had to insert a breathing tube to keep Fielder-Civil alive, and doctors suspect that even if he does survive, he could be left with permanent brain damage. "The doctors say they don't know the prognosis," said Aspin. "They said they put him in a coma to help him and due to infection. I'm praying he’ll survive, but I'm having to prepare myself that he may never wake up."

Though Aspin said Fielder-Civil has "never really been a drinker," his struggles with substance abuse -- and the law -- are well-known. After multiple trips to rehab, he recently completed serving a two-year prison sentence for armed robbery, from which he was released a mere two weeks ago.
