R.E.M.’s Hometown Featured in New ‘Made in America’ Video

Budweiser’s Made in America documentary series stopped by Athens, Ga., to delve into its vast, yet relatively unknown, music history. Artists like R.E.M.‘s Peter Buck and Drive-By Truckers member Patterson Hood talk about their favorite bands from Athens and some of their experiences. “If we hadn’t been in that kind of scene, we probably would have been a different band,” Buck notes.

Pylon was a pop-rock band that lived and played in Athens during the early ’80s and had a huge influence on R.E.M. One of their songs even appeared as a cover on the R.E.M. single for ‘Driver 8.’ The band broke up in 1983, but their renown increased dramatically when R.E.M. drummer Bill Berry told Rolling Stone that R.E.M. weren’t the best band in America — Pylon were.

Athens also spawned a cornucopia of amazing bands during the ’90s. Athens groups like Elf Power and Olivia Tremor Control helped define the underground music scene in the U.S. during this time. Now the town is home to more than 600 bands and musicians, as compiled in the town’s annual music directory. It’s a small book published every year to inform the residents and the University of Georgia students of the different musical acts they can catch.
