Freeze-Tag is the solo creation of multi-instrumentalist and electronic maestro Marcus Alan Ward. Hailing from Cleveland, Ward draws from a wide range of influences from music and visual art. He's just as likely to be influenced by Warhol or Matisse as he is by whatever he's listening to at the moment. After playing in a number of post-hardcore bands, he drew on his diverse resources in jazz, soul, hip-hop and electronic music to pursue new territory as Freeze-Tag. He released his first single last year, and today, we get a free download of his newest one, 'Eskimo.'
If you don't know Gentleman Reg, you should. His fifth full-length, 'Life of Leisure Part Two,' released on Heavy Head Records, has been called "ridiculously addictive," and it is. Today, we get a free download of the album's 'The Declaration.' Grab it here.
Emerging pop princess Mayda gives a nod to Madonna in her latest single, 'Panthers.' The buzzed-about singer's performance on the song is very strong, showing that under her flashy makeup and larger-than-life, Santigold-inspired live show is a bed of true vocal ability and talent.
Nashville's beloved party-anthem band Natural Child dropped their third full-length, 'Hard In Heaven,' this year on Burger Records, and today, they offer up a treat of a track called 'Derek's Blues.'
Pill Hill, the latest project from '90s post-grunge mastermind Dan Fowlds, stands apart from the rocker's best-known collective, Bump. After a few years on musical sabbatical, Fowlds has finally reunited with his guitar to bring us a melancholy drifter soundtrack. Named after a quaint Chicago neighborhood, the group features friends Mark Vandermyde on organ and Hannah Kennedy on violin.
For having roots so firmly planted in the "emo" (don't you just hate that word?) and pop-punk sound of the early 2000s, Act As If mastermind Peter Verdell leans much more toward radio-friendly indie pop than he does imitate the groups that he helped launch into successful careers during his time as A&R at Drive-Thru Records.
Machine Birds hail from Bergen, Norway. The duo of Maria Skranes and Marte Eberson make gorgeous, synth-laden dreamscapes that they're debuting on the 'Save Yourself' EP. Today we get a free download of the stunner 'If I.'
Men of North Country has been described as "Israel’s finest soul outfit." The seven-member group, led by Yashiv Cohen, has just signed to Acid Jazz records and released their first 7" single. Check out the tune 'People of Tomorrow' below.
Hungry Ghost are a trio from Portland, Ore., who make gloriously dirty, noisy rock 'n' roll. Culled from various '90s bands, Sara Lund, Andrew Price and Lorca Wood fuse their talents to create what's been described as an amalgam of "Olympia post-punk, Portland experimentalism, and New Mexican trash-garage." In other words, totally awesome.
Listening to Swampboots might make you think you're an adolescent Tom Petty walking through a desert with a guitar strapped to your back. No? Just me? OK, well, regardless, Brooklyn's Swampboots are a treat for the ear -- especially if you're the kind of listener who likes your audio with a mild twang and a whispery croon.
