Three years since the death of his friend and bandmate Adam “MCA” Yauch and at 48 years old, Beastie Boys’ Adam “Ad-Rock” Horovitz is at a unique and somewhat confounding juncture in his career.

“It’s a big challenge,” Horovitz told Rolling Stone. “It’s like, ‘What do you do with your life when your former life is no more?’ I have to figure it out. I don’t know if I ever will.”

In this sort of in-between moment, Horovitz has his hands in several different projects: acting, movie scores, a memoir and -- perhaps more surprisingly -- a collaboration with a local sandwich shop (Ad-Rock teamed up with New York’s Num Pang for a sandwich, with all proceeds going to charity).

His acting will be featured in the Noah Baumbach-directed While We’re Young, in which Horovitz will co-star with Ben Stiller. The memoir, of course, is the one he’s working on with his other Beastie Boys bandmate Mike “Mike D” Diamond. The book is due out this year, but Ad-Rock says that's actually an unlikely date.

“It’s nowhere near that,” he said. “There’s no way it’s going to happen [before 2017]. I might get sued by saying this, but I’m just being realistic.”

Of the writing process, Horovitz says he’s “remembering the fun things; not the depressing things. It’s going to be a weird book. [Publisher Spiegel & Grau] are giving us the freedom and leeway to do whatever we want.”

In addition to the memoir’s arrival, Horovitz also doesn’t foresee a 30th anniversary edition of the band’s 1986 debut, Licensed to Ill, next year – in fact, we may have to wait until 2036.

“Twenty-five should’ve been a bigger deal, but I didn’t even notice,” he commented. “Thirty is a bland anniversary. Maybe the 50th.”
