Beck intends to have his next album in stores this coming October — and it sounds like it'll mark yet another musical left turn in a career full of them.

Rolling Stone reports that Beck worked with in-demand producer Greg Kurstin on the upcoming LP, which has been in the works for several years — and gone through a number of incarnations — as he struggled to get the songs where they wanted to go. The end result, according to Beck, is a sort of cheerful rejoinder to his last effort, 2014's Morning Phase, that takes its energy from his recent time on the road.

"It's a summer night, people have their hands up," he explained. "It's a communal, celebratory thing. I wanted to take that into the studio, a kind of energy or joy. The thing that wakes you up a little bit."

Rolling Stone's report namechecks a number of tracks, including "Dreams" (earmarked for single status following the recent release of leadoff single "Wow"), "Seventh Heaven," and "No Distractions" — the latter of which is described as "a dance-y, Talking Heads-like stomp." As Beck went on to point out, his method of recording with Kurstin hearkened back to the way he assembled earlier efforts with the Dust Brothers.

"There's a substratum to a lot of the songs – songs within other songs, choruses that became bridges," he added. "It's not far from how I made my first couple of records."

Ultimately, Beck said he sees the still-untitled new record as a reflection of the "life-sparking" feeling of playing to crowds — and another chapter in a story he's following just like everyone else. "I want to have some new things to say. I'm still filling out the picture," he said. "We do 'Where It's At,' and you're like, 'OK, we needed that.' Then you do another one. It's all adding up to a picture."
