After the lush orchestrations and downcast tones of 2014’s Grammy-winning Morning Phase, it looks more and more like we’re getting a return to the upbeat, poppy Beck. Today, a new song by him, “Up All Night,” hit the internet, and you can listen to it above.
As with Kasabian’s “Comeback Kid,” which was unveiled in a similar fashion today (Sept. 26), “Up All Night” is part of FIFA 17, this year’s version of EA Sports’ immensely popular soccer video game. Via Stereogum, Q says that it will be on Beck’s next album, which is believed to be arriving at some point in November.
In addition to “Up All Night,” the new record will reportedly include “Wow,” whose video was unveiled two weeks ago, “Dreams,” which may be the next official single, “Seventh Heaven” and “No Distractions.” He’s been working with Greg Kurstin, best known for producing albums by Adele, Kelly Clarkson and Sia.
Back in July, Beck revealed that he was looking for a happier sound this time around. “It’s a summer night, people have their hands up,” he said. “It’s a communal, celebratory thing. I wanted to take that into the studio, a kind of energy or joy. The thing that wakes you up a little bit.”
The return to that feelalso affected his approach to songwriting. “There’s a substratum to a lot of the songs – songs within other songs, choruses that became bridges,” he continued. “It’s not far from how I made my first couple of records.”
