Billy Corgan Plays Three-Hour, Career-Spanning Acoustic Set in Chicago

Billy Corgan gave fans in his hometown of Chicago a ‘Tonight, Tonight’ to remember on Saturday (Aug. 30).

Accompanied by current Smashing Pumpkins guitarist, Jeff Schroeder, and — for a few numbers — two members of New York rock outfit Ex Cops, the Pumpkins frontman performed a massive 31-song, acoustic career retrospective as part of a concert series at Ravinia Festival in Highland Park. Just as he said he would, he churned out a a wealth of songs spanning the golden age of Smashing Pumpkins (‘Today,’ ‘1979’), his side-project Zwan (‘For Your Love,’ ‘Prairie Song’), rarities (‘Lonely is the Name,’ ‘The Rose March’) and brand new material (‘Burnt Orange Black’).

The show’s encore provided perhaps the strangest moments of the evening, however, as the Chicago Tribune reports Corgan performed a new rendition of ‘The World’s Fair’ from his unreleased project, ‘ChicagoSongs/ChicagoKid,’ and also invited members of his wrestling league and his brother to back him during a performance of Zwan’s ‘Of a Broken Heart.’
