Bob Dylan to Finally Release Complete ‘Basement Tapes’ Collection

The hundreds of recordings Bob Dylan made in 1967 as he recovered from a motorcycle accident have achieved a level of legend in the annals of rock that’s nearly unparalleled — and for the first time ever, they’ll all be officially released as a complete box set.

‘The Basement Tapes Complete: The Bootleg Series Vol. 11′ picks up where the 1975 compilation, ‘The Basement Tapes,’ left off with 138 songs on six CDs — including 30 tracks most fans never knew existed from the 20 reel-to-reel tapes Dylan recorded with the Crackers (later known as the Band).

Rolling Stone reports that the songs will be presented in nearly the same order they were originally recorded and hidden treasures include an early draft of ‘I Shall Be Released’ with different lyrics, a cover of Hank Williams‘ ‘My Bucket’s Got a Hole In It’ and country-fried takes on ‘Blowin’ in the Wind’ and ‘It Ain’t Me Babe.’ You can stream an alternate version of ‘Odds and Ends’ from the collection here.

According to Rolling Stone, folk musician and writer Sid Griffin wrote the liner notes for the upcoming set. “The stuff that people haven’t heard justifies, in every way, shape and form, all the hype, hubris and myth that surrounds these tapes,” he said. “Some of this stuff is mind-boggling.”

‘The Basement Tapes’ will be released on Nov. 4 and you can pre-order the set here.
