Conor Oberst Accepts Rape Accuser’s Apology

Conor Oberst has had a rough few months, ever since allegations that he raped a young fan surfaced late last year. On Monday, his accuser, Joanie Faircloth, issued a public apology, stating that her accusation, originally posted anonymously online, was “100 percent false.”

She wrote that she had “made up those lies about him to get attention while I was going through a difficult period in my life.”

Now Oberst has issued a statement of his own. “I have accepted Joanie Faircloth’s apology and retraction to clear my name,” the singer-songwriter writes. “This has been extremely difficult and stressful for me personally and for those I love. I’m appreciative of the family, friends, fans and business partners who supported me throughout this, and look forward to happier times as we all move forward with our lives.”

The original accusations were made last year by Faircloth (whose real name is Joan Elizabeth Harris) on the xoJane website, in which she claimed that Oberst had forced himself on her at an event in 2003, when she was 16 years old.

Earlier this year, Oberst counter-sued for libel. After seven months of trying to reach Faircloth, Oberst’s team had made contact, and she issued her public apology, which you can see below.
