Cynthia Lennon, the ex-wife of John Lennon, has died at age 75 after a battle with cancer. She is survived by her son with John, Julian, who shared the sad news in a statement posted to his website:

Cynthia Lennon passed away today at her home in Mallorca, Spain following a short but brave battle with cancer. Her son Julian Lennon was at her bedside throughout. The family are thankful for your prayers. Please respect their privacy at this difficult time.

Along with the announcement, Julian Lennon remembered his late mother in song -- see the tribute in the video above.

Born in 1939 in Blackpool, Lancashire in England, Cynthia Powell met John Lennon at age 18. They married in 1962, with Julian born a year later. In 1964, the Beatles made their iconic arrival to the U.S. and famed Ed Sullivan Show appearance.

The couple divorced in 1968 after which Lennon remarried to Yoko Ono in 1969, who gave birth to their son, Sean, in 1975.

Lennon has documented her first marriage to the former Beatle in two memoirs, 1978's A Twist of Lennon, which preceded her ex-husband's 1980 death, and 2005’s John.

Our thoughts and condolences go out to Lennon’s family and friends.
