Eagulls Unveil ‘Tough Luck’ Video

On ‘Tough Luck,’ the lead single from their forthcoming self-titled debut album, U.K. post-punk risers Eagulls aren’t talking about forgetting your umbrella or missing the bus. As singer George Mitchell told Spin, which premiered the song’s video earlier today, the lyrics derive from ‘Thalidomide Poem,’ a happy little piece he wrote about his granddad’s webbed feet.

Turns out the old man’s interconnected toes were the result of Thalidomide, a drug pregnant women were given back in the day to overcome morning sickness. That might explain why the ‘Tough Luck’ clip features both live footage of the band laying waste to a stage in their native Leeds and vintage shots of doctors and nurses.

“The song is portraying the gamble of trusting in something without knowing the true consequences,” Mitchell tells Spin.

Eagulls’ album lands March 4 via Partisan, and in advance of the release, the band heads to New York City in January to play Mercury Lounge and the Rough Trade store. Click here for more info on both.
