Three years in the making, 'Heaven Adores You,' the highly anticipated Elliott Smith documentary, will finally make its worldwide debut next week as part of the San Francisco International Film Festival. You can watch a trailer for the movie above.

The film, directed by Nickolas Dylan Rossi, got underway via Kickstarter in 2011 and features friends, fans, and fellow musicians talking about the late singer-songwriter.

The press release for 'Heaven Adores You' refers to it as "an intimate, meditative inquiry into the life and music of Elliott Smith. By threading the music of Elliott Smith through the dense, yet often isolating landscapes of the three major cities he lived in -- Portland, New York City, Los Angeles."

Smith's story is one worth telling: He released five increasingly ambitious records before he tragically took his own life in 2003. He was nominated for an Oscar, and became one of the most respected singer-songwriters of his generation.

Here he is performing his Oscar-nominated song at the Academy Awards in 1998.
