Eminem's childhood home, the one immortalized on the cover of his 2000 album 'The Marshall Mathers LP,' is up for auction, the Detroit Free Press reports, and for as little as $1, fans can enter the bidding fray and vie for a piece of hip-hop history.

It may sound like an opportunity for a steal, but there's a reason Em's boyhood residence -- located at 19946 Dresden, not far from 8 Mile Road -- isn't commanding millions. According to the Free Press, the neighborhood has gone to pot, and the boarded-up former Mathers residence is surrounded by more than a dozen homes that have suffered the same fate.

The property last sold in 2009, when a company called EM & UU Properties snagged the dilapidated house for $1. Eminem's mother, Deborah Mathers, originally bought the place back in 1987, and she stayed there until 1994, when she signed away the deed. The county foreclosed on the home in 2001, but not before it had changed hands roughly 10 times, never commanding much cash, despite its significance.

“In a case like this, if the property is blighted, or the whole neighborhood is blighted, it would be unusual to get a buyer,” said Kim Homan, director of the Michigan Land Bank, the state-operated program in control of the property and 11,000 others like it across the Motor City. “Nobody knew it was Eminem’s home, either.

According to Zillow.com, the uber-humble abode is worth $32,675, and at least one nearby resident, 49-year-old Rhonda Brown, hopes the rapper will return to his old 'hood, snatch the sucker up and give it to someone in need.

“It’s sad to see things like this, especially when you made it successful,” Brown said.
