The day after ranting about the dangers of entertainment, Father John Misty got back to entertaining with a set at the Newport Folk Festival, playing five of his own songs. But he still had a lot on his mind that he clearly wanted to get off his chest, such as disclosing that he had turned down a $250,000 payday from Chipotle to sing one of the Backstreet Boys' biggest hits in a commercial.

“I just got asked to do a Chipotle commercial not that long ago," he said in the video above. "I’ll tell you this: They were going to pay me a quarter of a million dollars to sing ‘I Want It That Way’ by the Backstreet Boys. Yup. That’s my life. I was like, 'Cool, so then I could just buy, like, two Cadillacs and crash them together. I don’t want your f---ing burrito money.'”

Still, Misty wasn't done trying to reconcile the ironic nature of his songs with the possibility of a Donald Trump presidency, which was the crux of his rant at WXPN's XPoNential Festival in Camden, N.J. Also in the video above, he introduced one of his songs with a degree of ambivalence. "I don’t know how I feel about this song anymore," he said. "It’s called 'Bored in the U.S.A.' I think it’s a little too late for this kind of s---. But, if anything, when I wrote this song, I wanted to tell people that it is OK to feel your own pain. Even if it is bourgeois pain that feels inauthentic to you, you have to still feel it, because if you can’t feel that, you’re not going to be able to feel some exotic kind of pain that some people group that you perceive to be more authentic than you has. So let’s just feel our yuppie pain with a song."

Although Misty turned the commercial down, Chipotle got Jim James of My Morning Jacket to sing with Brittany Howard of Alabama Shakes. The animated four-minute clip, called "A Love Story," debuted earlier this month and tells the story of a pair of neighbors, Ivan and Evie, who, as the song plays, go from starting competing orange juice and lemonade stands as kids to building chain restaurant empires. Eventually, they realize that they've lost their way and that they love each other. They give it all up to work side-by-side in a food truck. You can watch the whole thing below.
