Fans Crowdfund $245K to Bring Foo Fighters to Birmingham, U.K.

Foo Fighters might have set a dangerous precedent for themselves with this whole crowdfunded concert thing.

After fans in Richmond, Va., successfully brought the Foos to town for the first time in 16 years last week, NME reports a Kickstarter campaign to bring the band to Birmingham, England, has just successfully reached its goal by raising £150,000 ($245,000).

A statement on the Kickstarter page said the gig could happen next year, giving the Foo Fighters sufficient time to promote the release of their upcoming album, ‘Sonic Highways,’ set to drop Nov. 10.

The statement reads, “Every penny of this will be going into the project (minus any transaction fees and handling costs generated by creating the event). Every member of the team running the project will be doing so free of charge — this is a Not For Profit project.”

No word on whether or not the band will actually be playing the Birmingham show, although frontman Dave Grohl did recently tell a South African radio station that crowdfunding might be the new way to book tours. “I’m telling you, it could become the way that bands decide where they want to play,” Grohl said. “It’s a fun thing; it sort of changes the game. For the past 20 years we always decided who we’re going to play with and where we’re going to play. But now, if we hear that people want us to come somewhere, maybe we’ll come there.”
