Foo Fighters May Start Letting Fans Book Their Shows

Foo Fighters frontman Dave Grohl said that letting fans decide where the band should play could be the wave of the future, at least for the Foo Fighters. Grohl spoke with South African radio station 5FM in preparation for the band’s first trip to South Africa. He talked about, among other things, the successful crowdfunding campaign that convinced the band to play in Richmond, Va.

“I’m telling you, it could become the way that bands decide where they want to play,” the Foo frontman said. “It’s a fun thing. It sort of changes the game. For the past 20 years, we always decided who we’re going to play with and where we’re going to play. But now, if we hear that people want us to come somewhere, maybe we’ll come there.”

The trend of crowdfunding has become more popular as websites like Kickstarter and Indiegogo make it easier than ever. The organizers of the Richmond show executed their campaign through Crowdtilt, and raised enough money and fan support to convince the Foos to visit Dave’s one-time home state. There’s no date or venue yet, but the timing may be right for the band to kick off the tour for their upcoming album.

This won’t be the first time the Foo Fighters have worked closely with their fans. Back in 2011, the band played a small handful of shows in some lucky fans’ garages. There’s a documentary about the tour on YouTube. Check them out playing ‘Hero’ with fans close enough to smell Dave’s breath.
