Foo Fighters Play Marathon ‘Rock the Vote’ Concert

The Foo Fighters treated about 1,000 lucky fans attending a Rock the Vote concert at the Fillmore in Charlotte, N.C., on Wednesday (Sept. 5) to what Billboard reports is believed to be the band’s longest concert ever — a three-and-a-half hour, 35-song, career-spanning set. ”Tonight we play as long as we want and as much as we want,” frontman Dave Grohl told the intimate crowd — and apparently, they wanted lots of both.

The gig, which came one night before the Foos’ scheduled performance alongside R&B singer Mary J. Blige and others in support of President Barack Obama at the Democratic National Convention, was an atypically intimate affair. ”This is the biggest place we’ve played in quite a while,” joked Grohl. “We were gonna play the stadium but …” he added, referring to Bank of America Stadium, where Obama was scheduled to deliver his DNC speech Thursday night until the venue was changed due to the weather forecast.

The sprawling set list, which featured a 20-song main set and a 15-tune encore, included a selection of hits like ‘All My Life,’ ‘The Pretender’ and ‘My Hero’ and covers like Tom Petty‘s ‘Breakdown,’ Pink Floyd‘s ‘In the Flesh?’ and Wings’ ‘Jet.’ It also included a rare performance of ‘Winnebago’ by Late!, Grohl’s pre-Nirvana solo project.
