‘God of War: Ascension’ Super Bowl 2013 Commercial – What’s the Song?

The Super Bowl 2013 ad for ‘God of War: Ascension’ pairs snippets of the upcoming video game’s back-story with Ellie Goulding’s haunting tune ‘Hanging On.’ The highly anticipated game is set to hit stores on March 12.

Those unfamiliar with the gaming series might be a little lost when watching the commercial, but the basic gist is this: Kratos, the protagonist, was tricked into murdering his wife and child, and now he’s back to seek redemption for his sins.

Goulding’s lyrics are well suited for the clip, which includes a dreamlike scene where Kratos’ family is still alive before crumbling to ashes in his hands. “Every day I feel this pain,” she sings. “But you just turn and walk away.”

The track is from the British singer’s sophomore record, ‘Halcyon,’ which dropped last October via Cherrytree/Interscope Records. In addition to appearing in the live action trailer (see below), the song was also featured in the ‘Gossip Girl’ episode ‘The Revengers’ from December 2012.
