The Red Hot Chili Peppers have more than 28 million fans on Facebook, but we’re willing to guess that Greg Gutfeld of Fox News isn’t one of them. Yesterday, on his show The Five, he and co-host Eric Bolling got into a debate over their merits.

This news comes to us via Alternative Nation, who say that the program reported on Koko the Gorilla playing Flea’s bass. Gutfeld used it as an opportunity to trash the group. “As most musicians know, this is a vast improvement over the Red Hot Chili Peppers, the worst band on the planet,” he said.

Apparently, Gutfeld and Bolling have discussed the subject before, because Bolling came back, “The producers said, ‘You should do this story,’ and I said, ‘No. Gutfeld is going to say the ape is better than Flea.’”

Gutfeld parried with the kicker. “The ape is better than Anthony Kiedis,” he said. “By the way, the ape is 45, which is half the age of Anthony Kiedis. Red Hot Chili Peppers, poor man’s Faith No More, don’t ever forget it.”

if the birthdates listed on their Wikipedia pages are correct, Anthony Kiedis is 53, while Gutfeld will turn 52 next month. For his part, Bolling then called himself a “big fan” of the Chili Peppers.

But Gutfeld’s dig prompts the question: Is Koko the Gorilla actually better than Kiedis? Back in June, during the Chili Peppers’ set at the Pinkpop Festival in the Netherlands, an impromptu jam on the Beatles’ “Hey Bulldog,” where Flea sat down at a keyboard, caused the singer to pick up the bass and play along. You can judge for yourself by watching the video above, which was found by NME.
