Canadian-born L.A. transplants Grim Tower are a meeting of the minds of Stephen McBeam and Imadd Wasif. Both are well versed in psychedelic and experimental rock. Wasif has three solo albums to his name, along with collaborations with the Yeah Yeah Yeahs, and McBeam and his band, Black Mountain, have also released three LPs. For the twosome’s joint effort, however, they came up with a sound they call “new acoustic death folk.”

Wasif and McBeam say this sound is rooted in ‘90s noise and early folk, a la Harry Smith’s ‘Anthology of American Folk Music,’ which comprises folk released between 1927 and 1932. But don’t be mistaken: Grim Tower’s recently released ‘Anarchic Breezes’ still carries the psychedelic thumbprint of two artists who have been in the game for some time.

Today, we’re offering Grim Tower’s ‘Soft Séance’ for free download. It’s dark and brooding with sparse tambourines, but is it "new acoustic death folk?" Sure, why not. But the ruminating lyrics and trippy vocals found on lines like “Open up your hearts, set your soul free,” keep the duo’s feet firmly planted in their psychedelic backgrounds.

“‘Soft Séance’ is a fully realized expression of the band’s take on new acoustic death folk, a sonic landscape where molten guitars meet eastern drone,” Wasif told Diffuser.fm. “This track is a magnificent psychedelic beast.”

‘Anarchic Breezes’ dropped on May 21 via Outer Battery.
