Rock bands encounter lots of bizarre things while traveling around in the trusty old van, but what Here We Go Magic crossed paths with Wednesday afternoon was truly shocking. Or, more precisely, who they crossed paths with.

While driving through Ohio, the Brooklyn-based band picked up a hitchhiker that should be more than a little familiar to fans of campy B-movies like 'Pink Flamingos,' 'Hairspray' and 'Cecil B. Demented' -- because the hitchhiker was none other than the director of those films, John Waters.

The band documented the run-in with a series of tweets, starting with the pick up and then moving from there all the way through Waters buying them lunch and parting ways.

"Just picked up John Waters hitchhiking in the middle of Ohio.. No joke. Waters in the van," the band tweeted.

"What an utter gentleman, as natural and observant of people as one might imagine. A total joy, full of stories. Thanks JW, be safe out there," they added later.

Guitarist Michael Bloch later described the situation to Gothamist, saying that they saw Waters holding up a hitchhiking sign at the side of an on-ramp, but didn't recognize who it was until they drove past him. They turned around at the next exit and swung back by, hoping to run into him again. Bloch continued: "He was still there. We pulled up, opened the door and asked where he was coming from. 'Baltimore,' he said. And we said 'Get in, sir.' "
