Ikey Owens, Keyboardist for Jack White + the Mars Volta, Found Dead [UPDATED]
Isaiah ‘Ikey’ Owens, keyboardist for Jack White‘s touring band and a longtime member of the Mars Volta, was found dead in a hotel room this morning (Oct. 14) — he was on tour with White in Mexico. According to a statement released by Third Man Records, the remaining shows scheduled to take place in Mexico have been canceled.
Periodico Digital reported that authorities discovered Owens dead in his Puebla hotel room along with drugs and alcohol, but the cause of death has yet to be determined.
Update from Jack White’s Press Team on Oct. 15: “The coroner has determined that Ikey Owens died from a heart attack the morning of Oct. 14 at approximately 4AM. The only drugs found in his room were a small amount of marijuana.”
A native of Long Beach, Calif., Owens was a member of the Mars Volta from 2001-2010 and was the longest tenured member of the band outside founders Cedric Bixler-Zavala and Omar Rodriguez-Lopez. He also recorded solo material under the name Free Moral Agents and has performed or recorded with the likes of Dave Sitek of TV on the Radio, the Aquabats, Mastodon and poet Saul Williams. He was also part of the hip-hop duo, Look Daggers.
Owens teamed up with White prior to touring in support of White’s 2012 solo debut, ‘Blunderbuss’ and contributed to this year’s follow-up, ‘Lazaretto.’
Musicians and fans have been responding to news of Owens’ passing on Twitter:
