Jack White Is Covering a Whole Bunch of People in Concert These Days

Jack White is the new Arcade Fire, covering whomever the hell he chooses and whenever he feels like it. But unlike the Canadian collective — which hauled out covers of songs by R.E.M., Devo, Boyz II Men and others at their tour stops in those artists’ hometowns — White seems to just randomly toss out his choices in old cover songs.

His tour launched just a short time ago, and already he’s played songs by the Stooges, Metallica and Kanye West. At his concert in Paris on Monday, he tried out a few other covers, including the Police‘s ‘Message in a Bottle’ and Talking Heads‘ ‘Psycho Killer.’

And like his incorporation of Metallica’s ‘Enter Sandman’ into the White Stripes‘ ‘Canon’ over the weekend, these covers weren’t strictly note-by-note replications. Rather, White weaved the old songs into his own work, so ‘Message in a Bottle’ unspools during the Raconteurs‘ ‘Steady As She Goes’ and ‘Psycho Killer’ comes within the Stripes’ ‘Seven Nation Army.’

You can watch the results above and below, respectively.

According to a set lit posted on Consequence of Sound, the 27-song set actually contained six different cover songs, including classics by bluesmen Howlin’ Wolf and Robert Johnson, surf-guitar god Dick Dale and even Bob Dylan.

At this rate, he’s probably going to have covered anyone worth listening to over the past 100 years by the time the tour winds down.
