Jack White’s New Album to Be Sold in Super-Extravagent Vinyl Edition

Jack White is no stranger to gimmicks. After all, his band made its name on a little bit of wink-wink regarding the relationship between the two members. And then there’s that whole matter of breaking some sort of world record for the fastest record ever made last month.

With the release of his second solo album, ‘Lazaretto,’ about a month away, White has unveiled plans for a very special edition of the record. A very special edition indeed.

The Ultra LP version of ‘Lazaretto’ includes a whole bunch of bats— crazy things. We’ll just list them all here, and you can sort through which of them is the bats— craziest.

180 gram vinyl
2 vinyl-only hidden tracks hidden beneath the center labels
1 hidden track plays at 78 RPM and 1 plays at 45 RPM, making this a 3-speed record
Side A plays from the inside out
Dual-groove technology: plays an electric or acoustic intro for “Just One Drink” depending on where needle is dropped. The grooves meet for the body of the song.
Matte finish on Side B, giving the appearance of an un-played 78 RPM record
Both sides end with locked grooves
Vinyl pressed in seldom-used  flat-edged format
Dead wax area on Side A contains a hand-etched hologram by Tristan Duke of Infinity Light Science, the first of its kind on a vinyl record
Absolutely zero compression used during recording, mixing and mastering
Different running order from the CD/digital version
Utilizes some mixes different from those used on CD/digital versions

You might be asking yourself, “Who the f— has time for all this?” And we hear you. When we listen to music, we don’t want it to be a five-hour setup process that may or may not yield the version of a song we want to hear, you know?

And “Side A plays from the inside out”? Why? Why can’t it just play like a normal album? If someone is totally baked listening to the record (and you know there are totally baked fans who get into White’s totally awesome guitar skills), how many tries do you think it’s going to take until they figure out that the album plays from the inside out?

The above video helps explain some of these things.

‘Lazaretto’ comes out on June 10, so you have a few weeks left to decide if you want to spend more cash on the innovation-packed Ultra edition, or if the regular ol’ version of the album is good enough for you. In the meantime, here’s ‘High Ball Stepper,’ the first track released from the album:
