Singer-songwriter Jackie Greene has just signed a deal with the highly-respected Yep Roc label for his next full-length effort, Back to Birth.

This marks Greene's first new album in five years, and his first since his former band, the Black Crowes, parted ways. Greene -- whose sound is genuine, rootsy and planted firmly in elements of folk, blues and country -- has been compared to the likes of Gram Parsons, with The New York Times calling him "the Prince of Americana."

“Musically, this record is kind of a return to the simplicity that I started with, although I feel like I have a much better idea of what I’m doing now,” Greene says about Back to Birth. “I think the lyrics are the part that’s really evolved. A lot of these songs are looking at the notion of a cyclical existence, and the sense that life goes in a circle.”

Back to Birth is Greene’s seventh studio album since 2002. In addition, he also has a gig with Trigger Hippy alongside singer Joan Osborne and another former Crowe, drummer Steve Gorman. (Trigger Hippy will be swinging by Mountain Jam in early June -- grab your tickets here.)

The new album was recorded at Portland’s Supernatural Sound with Steve Berlin of Los Lobos producing. You can hear the first cut, "Trust Somebody," up above (via Wall Street Journal).

Greene will be hitting the road in advance of Back to Birth, which hits streets on Aug. 21, with some Trigger Hippy dates mixed in.
