Krist Novoselic Had to Relearn Nirvana Songs From a Book

Music fans got excited recently when the remaining members of Nirvana reunited to perform for the band’s Rock n Roll Hall of Fame induction. But for Dave Grohl and Krist Novoselic, coming back to old songs they hadn’t played in 20 years was a bit of a challenge. Novoselic mentioned in an interview with Rolling Stone that, in order to relearn his bass lines, he bought a book of bass tablature.

“I picked up a Nirvana tab book a week before to relearn my parts, but we weren’t up to speed at first,” Novoselic said, almost as an aside. But then he mentioned how emotional the experience of playing Nirvana songs was. “It started to flow, and it got better and better. Then it hit me and I got kind of somber. I was like, ‘Oh my God. I’m playing these songs again.'”

Grohl and Novoselic, when trying to pick artists to front the band for their performance, decided to take an all-female route. They asked around and secured an all-star lineup of guests to sing: Joan Jett, Kim Gordon, St. Vincent and teen sensation Lorde. After the Hall of Fame performance, the band played the greatest secret show in the history of secret shows at a small club in Brooklyn.

After the show, some vague remarks from Novoselic stirred the rumor pot about a possible Nirvana reunion. When asked if a reunion was in the cards, Novoselic responded, “That’s a good question. I mean, there’s Foo Fighters, and Dave has some other projects going on. And I have some commitments. But you never say never now. We did it. I sure won’t say no. Maybe we can even do some new music one day.”

Grohl’s answer to the same question, however, was less optimistic. “We looked at that evening as a night that may never happen again. That’s what made it so powerful and beautiful and meaningful. And it may never happen again, so we made the most of it. And it was f—ing great.”
