Canadian singer-songwriter Leif Vollebekk’s sophomore album, ‘North Americana,’ doesn’t drop until Jan. 28, but today, Diffuser.fm is pleased to offer an exclusive premiere of ‘Southern United States,’ the album’s opening track. Hear the winding alt-country tune — complete with a stellar harmonica solo — in the stream below.

The freewheeling song echoes one of the major themes explored on the new album: journeys and homecomings. It makes sense, considering ‘North Americana’ is an international product, despite what the album and song titles may lead you to believe. Vollebekk recorded his latest effort in studios as far-reaching as NYC, France and his home of Montreal.

Vollbekk’s search for the “perfect take,” coupled with his warble — which is covered in just enough rust to make us think of his contemporaries Ryan Adams and M. Ward — makes for an authentic take on modern Americana.
