Known for their futuristic and haunting sound, M83 prove the perfect choice to score Tom Cruise's latest sci-fi flick, 'Oblivion.' (The group is, after all, named for spiral galaxy Messier 83). The soundtrack made its official, full debut during an event at SXSW on Monday (March 11), where music fans and movie buffs alike gulped down the new tunes with their drinks.

While M83 weren't in attendance, their presence was felt and appreciated. The 'Oblivion' soundtrack is the brainchild of M83 mastermind Anthony Gonzalez and Joseph Trapanese, who also composed the score for the ‘TRON: Uprising' TV series. One track, 'Starwaves,' found its way online last week, though the most harrowing and suspenseful 'Oblivion' gems -- one featuring Norwegian songstress Susanne Sundfør -- are still to come with the official release.

Set on a post-apocalyptic Earth, 'Oblivion' finds Cruise exploring a world he never knew. Equal parts action and sci-fi, the movie relies heavily on the drive and intensity of M83's music, as if the onscreen twists and turns are following the music, rather than the other way around.

While M83 didn't make it to the SXSW unveiling, one star was in attendance: Cruise's awesome ride, the Bubble Ship. The 'Oblivion' soundtrack hits shelves April 9, while the flick flies its way into theaters nationwide on April 19.
