Exclusive Premiere: Marlowe Grey, ‘Sugar Plum Fairy’

As Marlowe Grey gear up for the release of their new EP, Midnight in Brooklyn, Diffuser is thrilled to partner with the Brooklyn alt-rockers for the premiere of “Sugar Plum Fairy” -- check it out in the audio player below.

With a complex subtlety reminiscent of the likes of Radiohead and Wilco, Marlowe Grey’s latest track is a dynamic listening experience -- both musically and lyrically.

“The title itself comes from listening to old Beatles and John Lennon bootlegs where Lennon himself would often start his takes with ‘sugar plum fairy, sugar plum fairy,’ instead of the traditional ‘one-two, one-two,’” frontman AJ Pietro tells us about the track. “It’s quirky, yet, vintage Lennon.”

He goes on, “I’ve often wondered, as a human on this planet, what the world would be like if Lennon was still around. What more of an impact would he have made? How different would the world be? Would it be much different at all? So, ‘Sugar Plum Fairy’ explores a view from Paul McCartney who, orphaned like Lennon, in parts, looks back at his life’s work and acknowledges John as the more accomplished songwriter and activist. He speaks of his now much more wiser view and understanding of what Lennon was up to.”

Pietro also adds that as a band, Marlowe Grey acknowledge that their work -- as well as many modern-day artists and activists -- is “a direct derivative of Lennon’s work. The song, stylistically, emotionally and lyrically, pays respect to that.”
