Listen to MGMT’s New Song ‘Hand It Over’
The long wait for MGMT's first new album in nearly five years is almost over — but first, the duo's offering fans their latest sneak peek at the upcoming Little Dark Age LP with the posting of the set's second pre-release track, "Hand It Over."
The lyric video for "Hand It Over," which you can stream above, arrives several months after MGMT posted a video for the album's title track — which itself arrived after a protracted buildup to the new album, which marks their follow-up to 2013's MGMT.
As bandmates Andrew VanWyngarden and Ben Goldwasser told Entertainment Weekly late last year, they sought to put together an album reflective of the times with Little Dark Age, establishing a sonic aesthetic that VanWyngarden described as "chaotic, overwhelming, anxious-feeling music." The singer went on to note that the new record stands in contrast to its predecessor in terms of musical and melodic focus.
"The last album kind of ended up being freeform structurally a lot of ways," VanWyngarden noted. "This time it was a slightly more focused attempt to write more structured songs."
Little Dark Age, which has yet to be assigned a public release date, comes after something of a problematic period for MGMT, who've endured a cooler reception from critics and fans with their two most recent studio outings. But both band members insist they haven't altered course on the new album, which they see as an extension of their career-long creative arc.
"We just wanted to find the people who, like us, grew up digging really deep to find the coolest, craziest music," said Goldwasser. "We wanted to make music for the freaks out there."
