Farm Sanctuary, an organization dedicated to rescuing abused and maltreated farm animals, will honor Morrissey for his animal rights advocacy.

According to a press release, Morrissey -- along with soon-to-be former Daily Show host Jon Stewart and his wife Tracey -- will be recognized for his “efforts to promote compassion for farm animals, who comprise the largest single population of abused and exploited animals on earth.” All three honorees will be bestowed with their awards during Farm Sanctuary’s upcoming gala in New York City on Oct. 24.

The ex-Smiths singer offered this statement regarding the distinction:

I am very proud to be offered this very intelligent award. My firm hope, of course, is that all people will arrive at sophisticated and compassionate enlightenment by understanding how the hidden hell of factory farming, slaughterhouses, and dairy farming is destroying the planet far more than any other known entity, and is an unimaginably evil torture for animals who ask for nothing but to be allowed a chance to live their lives. The future is fantastic due to the courage of Farm Sanctuary.

As part of his continued efforts, Moz penned an open letter addressed to Live Earth co-founders Al Gore and Kevin Wall, asking that the event's vendors not serve meat or dairy products. “If you choose to serve animal flesh at Live Earth, you’ll be making a mockery of the very concept of the event,” the singer wrote back in April, “in which case it should be renamed ‘Dead Earth: We Contributed!’”
