In the context of the My Bloody Valentine discography, a five-year gap between albums is nothing — and it sounds like that's all fans will have to endure before hearing the follow-up to the group's 2013 return effort, m b v.

Frontman Kevin Shields delved into the band's plans for new music during a recent interview with Pitchfork, revealing that their next project started off as something more modest before approaching album length. "Basically, the record started off as an EP, and I realized it has to be, like, a mini-album, because it’s going to be at least 40 minutes long. So it’s going to be an album, but I don’t really know how many tracks it’s going to be," he explained. "It’ll probably be seven or eight, by the looks of it."

Although the sessions have been waylaid while Shields works on vinyl remasters of the My Bloody Valentine catalog, he didn't waver when asked about a timeline for release. "Oh, we one hundred percent will," he responded when asked whether the band would have the new record out in 2018. "One hundred percent."

While Shields is juggling remastering duties alongside wrapping up the new album, he's also looking ahead to the group's next move — which means MBV fans can already start looking forward to a tour. "We’re trying to do gigs starting in the summer," he added. "We’re going to play live again, so that’s always a really good way to guarantee that we’ll get the record done."
