Stream Nine Inch Nails’ New ‘Not the Actual Events’ EP
The five-track collection, which is streaming via the Apple Music embed below, arrives as the last-minute fulfillment of a promise from frontman Trent Reznor to deliver new NIN music in 2016 — in the form of what he describes as “an unfriendly, fairly impenetrable record that we needed to make.” Guests on Not the Actual Events include Dave Navarro, who chips in on first single “Burning Bright (Field on Fire),” and Dave Grohl, who contributes to “The Idea of You.” Check out the complete track listing below.
Reznor and NIN bandmate Atticus Ross debuted Not the Actual Events with a Dec. 22 appearance on Apple Music’s Beats 1 radio show, sitting for a wide-ranging conversation that touched on his role at Apple as well as his current philosophy regarding releasing new music. As he pointed out, the cat’s basically out of the bag in terms of streaming, but for his most faithful fans, he’s offering specially curated physical product.
“This record, we kind of feel like we’re offering it for sale, it’ll be on streaming services, it’s not exclusive anywhere,” said Reznor (via Venture Beat). “But if you want it from us, we’re selling it as a piece of vinyl that feels like something we want you to have. I enjoy having a — it’s an experiential thing, you know, you have to touch it, you have to figure out where to put it, you know, you see it when you walk past it. It exists in the physical world.”
Adding that the band’s online store is also adding a physical component to digital orders, Reznor said he’s enjoyed rediscovering the forced commitment that comes with listening to vinyl, and is trying to restore a little of the friction that used to be part of the music consumer’s experience. “I don’t expect any or many people to follow that path,” he admitted, “but as the artist, that’s the premium experience to me.”
