Nirvana were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame last night, and the rumor turned out to be true: Joan Jett joined the surviving members onstage. But she wasn’t the only one who helped fill in for the late Kurt Cobain.

Dave Grohl and Krist Novoselic were also joined onstage, for different songs, by three other female artists: Lorde, St. Vincent and Sonic Youth‘s Kim Gordon. The Nirvana tribute capped the ceremony, which was held in New York City last night.

Jett performed ‘Smells Like Teen Spirit’ with the band (which also included guitarist Pat Smear, who joined the group on its later tours). Lorde sang ‘All Apologies,’ St. Vincent covered ‘Lithium’ and Gordon played ‘Aneurysm’ with the trio.

R.E.M. singer Michael Stipe, who was a friend of Cobain’s, inducted Nirvana into the Rock Hall. ““This is not just pop music — this is something much greater than that,” Stipe said during his speech. “Kurt, we miss you. I miss you. Nirvana defined a moment.”

Kiss, Peter Gabriel, Hall and Oates, Cat Stevens and Linda Ronstadt were also inducted into Rock and Roll Hall of Fame last night.
