Listen to North Mississippi Allstars’ Cover of R.L. Burnside’s ‘Long Haired Doney’ From ‘Prayer for Peace’

On June 2, North Mississippi Allstars will release their eight studio record, Prayer for Peace. Today, they premiered “Long Haired Doney,” a song by bluesman R.L. Burnside, who played an important role in their career.

“R.L. Burnside gave me my break and took me on the road in 1997, teaching me the ropes and his repertoire,” guitarist Luther Dickinson told Rolling Stone. “Playing music and hanging out with R.L. and his band, Kenny Brown and Cedric Burnside, was a life-changing experience and gave me a wealth of memories: conversations, jokes and songs that have still inspire me and teach me.”

Prayer for Peace was recorded in six studios around the country, including the Zebra Ranch in Hernando, Miss., which had been owned by Luther’s and drummer Cody Dickinson’s father, Jim Dickinson. “Long Haired Doney” was tracked at Memphis’ Royal Studios, the same building where soul legend Al Green recorded his classic sides.
