Lost & Found: Filmmaking Ain’t for Everybody
The world is full of tragedy. Often, that tragedy manifests from unfulfilled potential. With so much tragedy in the world, it’s a damn shame when we realize we missed out on something cool. Like the above video. Way back, during that foggy period in U.S. history that was the late ’60s, some amateur filmmakers came together for a brief moment and crafted something beautiful — a film known simply as ‘Oh, Wow!’
Simply put, ‘Oh, Wow!’ is the best amateur comedy-skit short film cobbled together from random bits filmed during 1968 and 1969 that you’ll see this week. So settle into a comfortable place free from distractions and treat yourself to 10 minutes of comedy gold.
We’ll be spouting catchphrases from this comedic masterpiece for years. Some of our favorite one-liners include, “Would you like to buy a ticket to the bowl?” and “Let’s not get emotional about this.” And we’ve already added Harry Unreasonable to the list of fake band names we use in our Flaming Lips fan fiction.
There is little information on the YouTube page of the person who uploaded it. He or she only writes, “Experimental sound film we made in late 1968 and early 1969. Many of the bits reflect the popular culture of the era, some of which we were goofing on. Pretty dumb now, but lots of fun then.”
Pretty dumb now? Don’t be so hard on yourselves. You have some solid comedic moments in there. Sure, there’s some questionable camera work. And yes, there are some unforgivable edits now and then. And admittedly, the sound is unstable at best. But that doesn’t mean it was all bad. We’re holding out hope for ‘Oh, Wow! 2: The Enwowening.’ Or something like that.
