Pearl Jam’s Mike McCready, Ex-Guns N’ Roses’ Duff McKagan Form Supergroup

A new supergroup is in the works, Rolling Stone reports, and it features Pearl Jam guitarist Mike McCready, former Guns N’ Roses bassist Duff McKagan and onetime Screaming Trees’ drummer Barrett Martin. The as-yet-unnamed unit still needs a vocalist, but the search is on for singers to help them crystallize their ideas and form some new ones.

“Duff and Barrett and I got together. We wrote some new stuff and we took some of those old Mad Season demos from that [unreleased] second ‘Disinformation’ record, so we are trying to find something to do with those,” McCready said. “We’re talking to Jaz [Coleman] from Killing Joke and I’ve been trying to find some singers to work on some of that stuff.”

If you need a refresher, Mad Season was another supergroup, this one a ’90s-era band featuring McCready, Martin and Alice in Chains singer Layne Staley. They had planned to release ‘Disinformation,’ but it never happened, and there’s evidently some music left over.

The musically incestuous relationship between the three principal members is long-existing. McKagan and Martin have a group called Walking Papers, whose recent record McCready worked on. And the April 2 reissue of Mad Season’s lone full-length, 1995’s ‘Above,’ inspired the new creativity between the three.

“I had a whole bunch of song ideas and Mike had a whole bunch of song ideas and Duff had a whole bunch of song ideas that were not making it into Walking Papers,” Martin said. “We decided that we would go into the studio and record them. Right now they’re being sent out to different singers. Mike and Duff are overseeing that because they know everybody.”

No word yet on when they might release anything, as they’re still working out the singer situation. But we’ll be patient — seems there’s no way this can’t be good.
