Bauhaus’ Peter Murphy Pleads Not Guilty to DUI, Hit-and-Run, Meth Possession

Peter Murphy Mugshot

Peter Murphy has plead not guilty to all charges stemming from his arrest on Saturday for driving under the influence, felony hit-and-run and methamphetamine possession. The former Bauhaus singer and goth-rock icon was picked up by police Saturday after allegedly rear-ending another vehicle in Glendale, Calif., (it was widely noted that he was driving a Subaru Forester) and driving off to Los Angeles, where another driver blocked his car until the police arrived.

The Glendale News-Press reports that Murphy, who was not in court on Tuesday, entered a not-guilty plea through his attorney and was released on his own recognizance later that night. Los Angeles County Superior Court Judge Frederick Rotenberg prohibited Murphy from driving “anywhere” and under “any condition” without the court’s permission. Several fans who showed up to court hoping to catch a glimpse of the ‘Bela Lugosi’s Dead’ singer left disappointed.

A post on Murphy’s Facebook page notes that the charges against him had been lowered from felonies to misdemeanors and promises that his forthcoming tour will go ahead as planned. It reads:

Dear All

Peter will be performing all tour dates as planned after being released from custody last night. All charges that were originally filled as felonies were lowered to misdemeanours and Peter was released with with no bail or restrictions. Even on the lower charges Peter has pleased not guilty. He wishes to thank everyone for their support and can’t wait to start touring.

That post was followed by this note from his attorney:

Peter Murphy was arrested by the Glendale Police Department on March 16th and was originally charged with Driving Under the Influence Causing Injury as a felony. In addition, Mr. Murphy was charged with Hit & Run and Drug Possession as misdemeanours.
The Glendale Police Department sought a bail deviation and bail was set at $500,000.00.
However, the District Attorney’s Office filed a complaint in Glendale Superior Court charging Mr Murphy with misdemeanor DUI, Hit & Run and Drug Possession.
Mr. Murphy’s lawyers from Hutton & Wilson entered a plea of not guilty to all charges and Mr. Murphy was released on his own recognizance.

Murphy’s Mr. Moonlight summer tour across North America and Europe will feature him performing the music of Bauhaus and is slated to kick off April 22 in San Antonio. He’s due back in court May 17 for a pretrial hearing.
