It was announced this morning (July 24) that legendary musical enigma Prince will release a new album later this year, called The Hit & Run Album. Prince's band 3rd Eye Girl revealed in an interview published today via BBC that the title of his 38th(!) studio album is a reference to his spur of the moment "pop-up" shows, where gigs are announced day of.

The band explained:

Super hardcore Prince fans that know every song he's ever recorded — we refer to them as "The Purple Collective" or "The Purple Army" — this album is absolutely for them, because it's super funky. It's weird, there's a lot of experimental sound. It's just hit after hit and definitely caters to those fans who just love to hear what Prince has to say, rather than wanting to always hear that classic Purple Rain Prince sound.

There is no firm release date or tracklist as of yet, but it was noted that the album will include the recently released "HARDROCKLOVER," as well as the previously unreleased deep cut "1,000 Hugs and Kisses" and a re-recording of "This Could Be Us," which originally appeared on Prince's 2014 album Art Official Age.
