Iconic singer Prince was found dead in his Minnesota home early Thursday, according to his publicist. He was 57 years old.

Last week, Prince’s private plane was forced to make an emergency landing in Moline, Illinois and he was briefly hospitalized for “flu-like symptoms.” A body was discovered at the musician’s Paisley Park compound in Minnesota early Thursday morning.

TMZ reported that Prince was actually rushed to the hospital last week for treatment of a drug overdose. “Multiple sources” claim doctors gave the singer a “save shot,” which is typically used to counteract the effects of an opiate.

This story is still developing.

Born Prince Rogers Nelson in Minneapolis on June 7, 1958, he reportedly wrote his first song at age 7. Prince emerged in 1979 and became a global superstar in 1982 with his breakthrough album, 1999, quickly becoming a pop culture icon through his theatrical and androgynous fusion of pop, funk and R&B.

Prince released 29 studio albums throughout his career, selling more than 100 million copies. His most recent was last year’s HITnRUN Phase Two. He won seven Grammys and an Oscar in 1984 for best original song score for his film, Purple Rain. He was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2004.
