Queens of the Stone Age Will Reportedly Release a New Album in 2017

Queens of the Stone Age are expected to put out the follow-up to 2013’s …Like Clockwork at some point this year. It’s unconfirmed because the news comes not from the band, but by Mastodon’s Troy Sanders, who plays with Queens of the Stone Age’s Troy Van Leeuwen in Gone Is Gone, which also includes Tony Hajjar of At the Drive-In and keyboardist Mike Zarin.

Sanders was speaking to Rolling Stone about how Gone Is Gone  is working on a full-length project called Echolocation and whether or not it interferes with their main gigs. “I like to think none of us needs this band, but we all really want this band,” he said. “When that’s the mentality, this is special to the four of us. Otherwise, we wouldn’t dedicate the first week of 2017 to working on this band. For example, Queens of the Stone Age, Mastodon and At the Drive-In have all been recording, and we all have new records coming out this year.”

However, Sanders acknowledged that their respective schedules have made it difficult to perform live, having only played two shows together, but the chemistry they share makes it all worthwhile.

“We’ve all been extremely busy writing and recording, and we’re about to get super-busy touring the world,” he continued. “So I believe we’re all fulfilled to a certain degree with all we have going on. That sets a special tone for a very special thing we all share. This band doesn’t bring us fame or money, but it brings us a different sense of fulfillment and energy that we all give each other.”

Last summer, shortly before Gone Is Gone released their debut EP, Queens of the Stone Age frontman Josh Homme revealed that the band were “locked in” to the idea of a new record.

Although Mastodon also haven’t announced a release date for their new record, it’s likely that it will be out in the early spring. They’re embarking on a lengthy North American tour with the Eagles of Death Metal beginning April 14, and have promised a copy of the record to everybody who buys tickets.
