Ramones’ ‘Leave Home’ Set For Deluxe 40th Anniversary Treatment

Following in the footsteps of the anniversary edition of the Ramones 1976 debut, Rhino Records has announced a special, deluxe re-issue of their classic second album, Leave Home, complete with a new mix, session takes and live material. The box set is due for release July 14.

Originally released in January of 1977, Leave Home found the Ramones sharpening their sonic attack while pushing their ’60s pop leanings to the fore with such classics as “Glad to See You Go,” “Swallow My Pride,” and “Gimme Gimme Shock Treatment.”

The 30-minute album has been expanded into a three-CD /one-LP box, which features a brand new 40th anniversary re-mix of the album created by producer Ed Stasium from the original multi-track tapes. “Generally, the consensus was [the original] maybe sounded too clean,” said Stasium in the liner notes. “The guitars panned completely left-right detracted from the band’s foreboding presence, and the reverb effects especially were a little excessive.” The first disc also includes a remastered version of the original mix.

A second disc will contain more than two dozen rare and unreleased recordings, including rough mixes for 15 tracks recorded for Leave Home at Sundragon studio in New York. The non-LP b-side “Babysitter” is here along with “Sheena Is a Punk Rocker, which was added to Leave Home in place of “Carbona Not Glue,” which was removed for legal reasons at the time. The disc concludes with a combination of 18 alternate mixes and instrumental versions of all tracks from the album. The third disc features an unreleased recording of a concert at CBGB on April 2, 1977.

The deluxe Leave Home comes packaged in a 12″ x 12″ hardcover book, and is limited to 15,000 copies worldwide. The book features stories about the band by legendary former manager Danny Fields, as told to renowned music scribe Michael Azerrad, as well as details about making the album. A single disc of the new re-mix will also be available, along with digital download and streaming.
