In the very first televised category at the 57th Annual Grammy Awards Show, Sam Smith was honored with the distinguished Best New Artist prize.

From Iggy Azalea and Bastille to Brandy Clark and Haim, the Grammy was justly deserved by all of them, but it’s tough to argue that Smith hasn't earned his place at the top of the pile after his immensely successful 2014. He kept things short and sweet (something we hope host LL Cool J will do the rest of the night) with his acceptance speech, thanking his label, family and friends.

If you question his entitlement to this award, maybe this will help sway your opinion: In 2014, Smith was the only artist to sell one million albums in both the U.S. and the U.K. His debut, 'In the Lonely Hour,' also picked up the Best Pop Vocal Album against the likes of Katy Perry, Ed Sheeran, Ariana Grande, Miley Cyrus and Coldplay.

That record is also nominated for Album of the Year. Additionally, he was up for Best Pop Solo Performance, though Pharrell Williams' 'Happy' won that category.

Congrats to Sam Smith, this year's Best New Artist!
