Former Silverchair frontman Daniel Johns has opened up about his new solo career in his first interview in the eight years since his band’s last album, 2007’s Young Modern. Speaking with 9Jumpin’s Today Show, Johns discussed his upcoming solo EP, its lead single, “Aerial Love,” his newly adopted R&B sound and his break from Silverchair (watch the full interview in the video above).

Earlier this month, the Australian singer-songwriter debuted a video for “Aerial Love,” which Johns says is “me on my own personal journey through a desert, which I guess is a metaphor for loneliness and discovering a world of sexual beings and uninhibited love, which I thought was quite beautiful.” Watch it below:

Though Silverchair’s last album arrived back in 2007, it wasn’t until 2011 when the alt-rock outfit officially parted ways.

“I guess it’s taken so long to release new music because when we decided to take a break from Silvercahir, I took a bit of time to step away and hone the craft a little bit,” Johns explained.

For his new EP, Johns worked with producer Joe Little, who also worked on Lorde’s 2013 debut album, ‘Pure Heroine.’

“I got really used to writing by myself for such a long time, but I was really ready to collaborate with people, especially people that I trusted and thought were really talented,” the singer continued.

Johns' EP will arrive March 13.
