During the soundcheck prior to Thursday’s concert at the New Daisy Theater in Memphis, Smash Mouth singer Steve Harwell had difficulty breathing and went to the hospital. As a result, the band canceled that show, as well as last night’s show at the Wildey Theatre in Edwardsville, Ill.

According to TMZ, Harwell has suffered from a type of cardiomyopathy, where the heart is enlarged and weakened, and has difficulty pumping blood, for two years. They also said that he had been experiencing symptoms for the previous four days, but continued to perform through it. At the hospital, at which Harwell arrived via Uber rather than an ambulance, Harwell was given oxygen and an IV, as well as steroids and an inhalers.

His manager told Billboard that it ‘was not an emergency situation.” The manager added that, due to his condition, “Whenever he is not feeling great we take precautionary measures just to make sure everything is OK, especially while he is on the road touring. The doctor is running some tests but he appears to be just fine and intends to resume the tour [Saturday] in Portsmouth, Ohio.”

Yesterday, the band’s official Twitter account tweeted, “He’s much better!”

There is no announcement yet as to when the shows will be rescheduled. Smash Mouth’s tour is booked through the end of September, and you can find all the dates at their website. This year, they are celebrating the 20th anniversary of their double-platinum debut, Fush You Mang, which featured their first hit, “Walkin’ on the Sun.”
