Surfer Blood guitarist Thomas Fekete lost his battle with cancer on Monday (May 30). He was 27.

Fekete's wife shared the news on the GoFundMe page established after the guitarist and founding member of the Floridian indie outfit was diagnosed with a rare and aggressive form of sarcoma cancer last year. “Our sweet Thomas passed on last night, peacefully in his sleep, holding my hand,” she wrote. “With one last sigh, he let go of the burden of pain and suffering that he has been bravely carrying for so long. I am full of comfort knowing that he is now free, and long for the day I get to be with him again.” Read her entire statement here.

Fekete was a founding member of the band in 2009 when they were originally called Jabroni Sandwich. They changed their name to Surfer Blood and released their debut single, "Swim," to critical acclaim in 2009.

Fekete contributed to three albums and an EP, including last year’s full-length 1000 Palms. But he left the band before its release to seek treatment for the cancer that had spread to his spine and lungs.

In November, Real Estate, Yo La Tengo, Guided by Voices, Yoko Ono, Interpol and more auctioned off unreleased songs to raise money for Fekete's medical bills. Fekete also released a cassette-only solo album called Burner to help pay for this treatment.
