Band of Horses

Seattle indie-rockers Band of Horses are set to return with their fifth album, which will be produced by Grandaddy’s Jason Lytle.

Dawes is one of those rare rock acts -- think Kings of Leon or Ray LaMontagne -- that glides effortlessly between popular music and a believably vintage-sounding aesthetic. Singer Taylor Goldsmith’s analog lead vocals may be unique for the ProTools-era listener, but his delivery is, unquestionably, a chip off of Jackson Browne’s old block. (Somewhat ironically, the band has backed Browne on tour).

The 2012 Railroad Revival Tour -- an eight-show indie-meets-country mishmash that was to have featured Willie Nelson and Jamey Johnson -- has been cancelled, but for Band of Horses, the show will go on. In light of the recent cancellation, they'll play a series of headlining gigs around the same cities but at different venues.

It's funny how catchy tunes get called "infectious," same as diseases, with the most infectious becoming a part of us. Way back in the mid-2000s, Band of Horses emerged as purveyors of such songs. As they prepare to release 'Mirage Rock' on Sept. 18, Band of Horses have released a new track from the album called 'Slow Cruel Hands of Time,' a departure from the up-tempo energy of the album's lead single, 'Knock Knock.'

Band of Horses knew that enlisting veteran producer Glyn Johns to helm their forthcoming 'Mirage Rock' album would be a new and challenging approach, both for his use of old-school recording techniques and his general demeanor in the studio. Band of Horses are taking the show on the road. The South Carolina-based rockers have mapped out a brief headlining fall North American tour in support of their forthcoming 'Mirage Rock' album, which hits stores on Sept. 17. The trek is scheduled to kick off on Oct. 10 in Cincinnati, Ohio and will run through a Sept. 15 gig in Orlando, Fla.

It may sound like the beginnings of a bad joke, but 'Knock Knock' is actually the title of the catchy first single off Band of Horses' forthcoming 'Mirage Rock' album (out Sept. 18). The official video just premiered this afternoon (Aug. 24) on NPR's First Listen (you can watch it above), and the clip's clever lo-fi send-up of vintage '70s nature films is quite amusing.

Band of Horses recently holed up at the lovely Pink Garter Theater in Jackson Hole, Wy. to rehearse for what promises to be a lengthy stint on the road (it's already mapped out through January) supporting their forthcoming second major label full-length, 'Mirage Rock,' and wouldn't you know it, surprise of all surprises: The cameras were rolling the whole time.
