Flaming Lips

Born of a noisy punk ethos, the Flaming Lips' evolution from art-rock space cadets is the product of three decades of sonic experimentation. After straying from the blustery garage-steeped cacophony of their early independent releases, the Lips have spent the better part of their modern years toying with the crux of performance pop artistry and theatrical kitsch. While 1993’s ‘She Don’t Use Jelly’ is their only song to get much airplay, the band has continued to carve out a niche for eccentricity among the lush orchestration of acclaimed albums like ‘The Soft Bulletin’ and ‘Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots.’ Over the years, their neo-psychedelia has earned them three Grammys, but it's their notorious antics both onstage and off -- blood-infused vinyl, robot-inspired musicals and live spectacles that include riding around audiences in life-size bubbles and lots and lots of glitter – that has amassed a loyal following.

The Flaming Lips and Wayne Coyne haven’t conquered Broadway … yet. That might be the next thing to check off their band bucket list, however, as 'Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots,' a musical inspired by the band's Grammy-winning 2002 album of the same name, might be headed towards the Great White Way.

In the first installment of our interview with Steven Drozd of the Flaming Lips, the multi-instrumentalist spoke at length about the band's 2013 Super Bowl commercial, explaining that it was a "painless experience" destined to endear him to his in-laws. Toward the end, he hinted that the song in the Hyundai spot, 'Sun Blows Up Today,' sounds little like the material on the band's forthco

Although Beyoncé is the big-name performer at this year’s Super Bowl, the Flaming Lips will be part of the action, too, thanks to the band’s appearance in a commercial for Hyundai. The Oklahoma City rockers wrote a classic-sounding new song, ‘Sun Blows Up Today,’ for the spot, which includes footage of the band performing in unusual places, and their confetti-spewing tour bus. “It was a really pai

April Fool's Day won't come soon enough for Flaming Lips fans, as the band has announced an April 1 release date for its next album, titled 'The Terror.' And from the way frontman Wayne Coyne talks about it, the Lips' follow-up to 2009's 'Embryonic' will live up to its dark and dreary name.

The Black Keys and the Flaming Lips will join forces for a brief but all-powerful spate of dates this spring. Both bands are already touring separately, and their paths will converge on April 28 and remain as such through May 3. It's not enough to label it an actual "tour," but that's semantics. All that matters is that they will grace the same stages.

If you've seen the Flaming Lips live, you know all about the crazy multimedia show they put on. The spectacle includes a wild light show, bubbles, balloons, buckets of confetti and singer Wayne Coyne's giant laser-shooting hands. Unfortunately, the Lips report that those specialized hands went missing after the band's appearance at the Southbound Festival in Busselton, Western Australia, last week
