They became the world’s gateway, not only to innumerable bands who’d before only existed in music’s underground, but to a completely different way of thinking about music and musicians. Before frontman Kurt Cobain took his own life, Nirvana recorded three stunning studio albums. Cobain, along with Krist Novoselic and a young Dave Grohl, combined catchy hooks, abstract-yet-memorable lyrics and high energy into a sound that the mainstream desperately needed. Nirvana gave a voice to scores of kids that just couldn’t relate to the world of Motley Crue and Guns N' Roses. Nirvana proved to be a cathartic relief to the anxiety felt by millions of teenagers across the country.
